The Communication Requirement

Short detour to the MIT Communication Requirement website

Distinct from the HASS Requirement
The HASS Academic Administrator does many things, but the SHASS Dean's Office does not administer the MIT Communication Requirement, which is separate from the HASS Requirement.

Good News: CI-H subjects also count toward the HASS Requirement

All MIT undergraduates must take four Communication-Intensive (CI) subjects. Two of these must be HASS subjects, designated CI-H or CI-HW and usually taken during the freshman and sophomore years. Most CI-H/CI-HW subjects can be applied toward both the Communication and the HASS Requirements. (Many CI-H subjects are also HASS-Ds and can be applied toward both the Communication and the "old" HASS-D Requirements.)
The other two Communication-Intensive subjects, designated CI-M, are in the student’s major field, and are usually taken during the junior and senior years.

Note to Instructors
To apply for CI-H designation, please contact the Office of the Communication Requirement for more information.
