How do I cross-register at Harvard?
The guidelines for cross-registration are available online here. You will need to pick up a cross-registration form in person from the HASS Academic Administrator. We recommend that you read over the guidelines carefully before coming in. If you have questions after reading the guidelines, we are happy to answer them.
Can I cross-register (at Harvard) as a freshman?
No, sorry, the cross-registration program is for upperclassmen (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) only. As a first-year student, you have should spend your time enjoying what MIT has to offer. You will then have three years to take up to half of your course load at Harvard in any given semester.
Can I take a class at Harvard and have it count toward my HASS requirement?
Yes, in fact many Harvard classes are already coded for HASS credit. If your class isn’t coded already, but is appropriate for HASS, you can petition to get HASS-Elective credit. An intermediate-level language class may also be approved by petition to count as the HASS-D Language Option.
Can I take my HASS-D classes at Harvard?
No, with the exception of an intermediate-level language class which may be approved by petition to count as the HASS-D Language Option. You can get HASS-Elective credit by petition for appropriate classes taken through the Harvard/MIT Cross-Registration Program. Some Harvard classes are even coded for HASS already.
If I take a class at Harvard, how will it show up on my transcript?
Classes taken at Harvard appear on your transcript the same way MIT classes do. You will receive a letter grade unless you register as a listener or under the Junior-Senior P/D/F option.
Can I use the Junior-Senior P/D/F Option for a class taken at Harvard under cross-registration?
Yes, under the same conditions as an MIT subject—i.e., it will count as general unrestricted elective credit in your departmental program.
Can I cross-register at Harvard for non-HASS classes?
Yes, you follow the same procedures. If you want a class to count toward a non-HASS requirement, you’ll need to speak to the appropriate MIT department.
How do I cross-register somewhere other than Harvard?
The HASS Academic Administrator is involved only with undergraduate MIT students wishing to cross-register at Harvard. For all other cross-registration processes, please contact the Registrar’s Office or visit their website.
How can I find the meeting times and locations of Harvard classes?
You may view everything online at the Harvard website.
When are the placement exams for languages at Harvard?
These exams are always given the week before classes begin at Harvard. You should contact the appropriate department at Harvard, or ask for help from the HASS Academic Administrator.
Does it cost anything extra to cross-register?
No, not at Harvard. For information on other programs, you may contact the Registrar’s Office or visit their website.
