Do I have to enter the HASS-D Lottery for a HASS-D Language Option?
No, you register normally for these foreign language classes.
Do I have to enter the HASS-D Lottery for a HASS-D other than the Language Option?
Yes. Click here for HASS-D Lottery instructions.
How do I request guaranteed placement in the HASS-D Lottery?
If you did not receive your first-choice class through the HASS-D Lottery, you can be guaranteed a space in that class the next time it is offered. If you are interested in exercising this right, you must contact the HASS Education Office, with your name, MIT I.D. number, and the class you wish to be entered in, during pre-registration. You will then receive confirmation of your place in the class. Please note: Guaranteed placement is NOT automatic. If you are interested in this option, you MUST contact the HASS Education Office.
I didn’t get my first choice in the HASS-D lottery. What can I do?
If you did not receive your first choice through the HASS-D Lottery, you can be guaranteed a space in that class the next time it is offered. See the above explanation of guaranteed placement.
I didn’t get anything in the HASS-D Lottery. What can I do?
Even if you did not receive a class through the lottery, you can still take a HASS-D this semester. You can find an online list of HASS-D classes that had open spaces after the lottery ran here. We recommend that you look through the Open Class List and see if any look promising. Once classes begin, spaces may open up HASS-D’s not on the Open Class List, but that is still the best place to start. No matter which HASS-D subject(s) you want to register for, you should take an Add/Drop form to the first class meeting and ask the instructor to sign.
If I got my first choice in the lottery but I can’t take the class, can I defer it and take it next semester?
No, sorry. You just have to enter the lottery again the next time it’s offered.
If I got assigned to a section that conflicts with my schedule, what can I do?
You should contact the instructor of the section you want to take to find out if there is room in that section. If so, inform the instructor whose section you were assigned and attend the section that you wanted. (Be sure that instructor adds you to his/her class list.) If it is the same course number, you should not fill out an Add Drop form.
Where can I find HASS-D classes with spaces available?
After the lottery runs, you can find a list of classes that still have spaces available online on our Open Class List. However, this list is accurate only until classes begin. Once classes start, spaces may open up in classes not included on the Open Class List and the spaces that were available may fill up. For the most up-to-date information after the start of classes, you should contact individual departments, programs and sections or individual instructors.
I’m a graduating senior and I didn’t get the HASS-D that I need in the lottery. Is there anything you can do to help?
No, sorry, the HASS-D Lottery assigns students completely at random; no one has preference. Students should complete the HASS-D requirement long before senior year. If you wait until your last semester and something goes wrong, you may not be able to graduate on time. We are happy to talk to students about their HASS requirement but if you wait too long, there might not be anything we can do.
