Freshman HASS-D Lottery Information Page

Welcome Entering Freshmen

You may enter the HASS-D Lottery from the link below. (This is only relevant to entering freshmen. Second-semester freshmen and all other continuing students should enter the lottery through pre-registration.)

What is the HASS-D Lottery?

The HASS-D Lottery manages enrollments for some Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) subjects with enrollment caps. If you are interested in any subjects that happen to be designated as “HASS-D”, you should enter the lottery.

Why enter the HASS-D Lottery?

Not all HASS subjects are in the HASS-D Lottery, but many of the courses designed for first-year students are HASS-D’s. Also, most HASS-D’s are also CI-H’s, and all HASS-D’s also carry a HASS Distribution designation

If you are placed in a HASS-D that you later decide not to take, you can easily drop the subject in the online registration system. It is possible to add HASS-D’s after the semester starts, but only if there are spaces available, so entering the HASS-D Lottery is the best way to ensure a place in a class.

Does the Freshmen Essay Evaluation (FEE) affect the HASS-D Lottery?

No, your FEE results do not directly affect whether or not you should enter the HASS-D Lottery. If you are required to take a CI-HW, you must take one before any CI-H’s will count towards the Communication Requirement, but if you decide to wait until the spring, you can still take HASS classes (including HASS-D’s) in the fall. If you do not know your FEE results yet, but think that you might be interested in taking a HASS-D, you should just enter the lottery. You can always drop a HASS-D if you end up wanting or needing to take another class.

Deadline

Your deadline for entering the Lottery is August 19, at 5:00PM EST.
