Background

MIT SHASS Communications is the communication team in the Office of the Dean of the MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. The group develops a wide range of content and materials to support Dean’s Office projects, share the research and teaching of the School’s academic units, further development efforts, engage with the mediam and shape the School's identity and messages. Our role also includes ongoing collaboration and coordination with communication leaders and initiatives across the Institute.

Positions Available

Currently, we have two positions available on our team for longterm freelance partners: 

 

• Design, Website, and Digital Materials Associate

• Media Relations Associate
| with skills in analysis

 



1. Design, Website, Digital Materials Associate



Overview

We seek a part-time, freelance colleague to join our team to work on a range of projects and materials, including:

 

• Assistant to the Webmaster
Enter content on the MIT SHASS website; develop new pages and sections in collaboration with the Webmaster

• Design Assistance
With guidance from the Communications Director, select and prepare photographs for use on the website, social media, and other digital platforms; Prepare highly-visual slide decks for presentations, and other digital materials.  

• Social Media
Creative input for social media campaigns

 

Candidates for this position will have strong skills and experience in:

Design (concepts, typography, imagery, layout, color)
Web editing (Drupal)
Collaboration: ability to work well and creatively with other team members
Project management: Ability to organize and manage projects
Knowledge of academic culture; MIT experience a plus
Relevant software and platforms (e.g., Mail Chimp, PhotoShop, Sprout Social, PPT, InDesign; Twitter, Instagram, FB)

 

Qualifications

Minimum five years related work experience.
Degree in communications, design, or related fields a plus
Experience with design and a range of software and platforms
Interest in the humanistic fields (social sciences, arts, humanities)
Experience managing a social media channel
Ability to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines

About

This is a P/T freelance position. The position will be compensated on an hourly rate, to be established commensurate with experience, and will be up to 16 hours a week. We aim to fill the position by early March 2021. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and the position will remain open until filled.

2. Freelance Media Relations Associate | with skills in analysis



Overview

We seek a part-time, freelance colleague to join our team to work on a range of projects and materials. Under the guidance of the Media Relations Manager, projects and materials would include:

 

• Media Monitoring and Analysis
 
Use traditional and social media reporting tools to track and analyze School’s reach.
Prepare clear, visual reports for the Dean, School leadership, and communications team.
Use existing KPIs/metrics and also work to improve process.
 
• Media Outreach
 
Research and assemble highly targeted media lists for various projects.
Draft pitches and other media communications
Assist with strategy and exploration of new angles to publicize School’s contributions

 

Candidates for this position will have skills in and/or capacity to learn:

Basics of media outreach, e.g. how to pitch and communicate with journalists
Strong news sense and ability to think creatively
Ability to work well and creatively with other team members
Strong organization and project management
Knowledge of academic culture; MIT experience a plus
Relevant software and platforms for analysis (Cision; Google Analytics, etc.)

 

Qualifications

Experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, or other communications field
Or: currently enrolled in undergrad or grad program in journalism, public relations, or another communications field.
Self-motivated with strong attention to detail
Ability to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines.

Capacity to handle multiple projects
Professionalism, discretion, good judgment for sharing news and information
