Welcome to the School's website. We're glad you're here. On this page, you will find an overview and links for some of the primary features of our website. On the navigation bar to the left, you'll find even more resources.

At MIT, we consider the humanities, arts, and social sciences essential — for educating young engineers, scientists, thinkers, and citizens; for meeting the world's great challenges; and for sustaining the Institute's capacity for innovation. Learn more about the MIT SHASS Mission.

Research with a global influence

MIT SHASS is home to a distinguished faculty whose research has global influence, and to superb graduate programs, all recognized as among the finest in the world. To name just a few areas of impact, the School's research helps alleviate poverty, safeguard elections, steer economies, understand the past and present, improve health policy, articulate morality, plan space policy, assess the impact of new technologies, understand human language, and create new forms at the juncture of art and science. Take a look at some of the exciting explorations in our Research Portfolio.

Teaching every undergraduate

The School's mission also includes a core part of an MIT education: our faculty help all undergraduates gain a range of critical skills needed for success in every endeavor. The depth and range of cultural and historical perspectives, and the capacity for judgment, critical thinking, and lifelong creativity gained in engagement with the School's disciplines are among the hallmarks of an MIT education. Learn more about the subjects we teach in the Fields of Study and TOUR de SHASS sections.

International education

The School also has a central role in international education at MIT, and in preparing students to be leaders and global citizens. Through MISTI, the School's pioneering applied international education program, MIT students learn how to work, lead, and thrive in cultures around the globe.
