The itinerant preacher who helped secure the separation of church and state
Marjoleine Kars, a Senior Scholar in MIT’s History Section, wrote a New York Times Magazine feature about John Leland, a preacher whose actions and advocacy helped lay the groundwork for America’s constitutional separation of church and state. “Liberty of conscience was ‘inalienable,’ in Leland’s view,” Kars writes.
