Chart your own course by combining your studies

With a joint degree, pursue your passions and interests while developing in demand workplace skills.

A joint degree combines humanities and science or engineering coursework. Students who earn a joint degree receive either a Bachelor of Science in Humanities and Engineering (Course 21E), or a Bachelor of Science in Humanities and Science (Course 21S).

Joint degrees require 60% of work in a humanities field and 40% of work in an engineering or science field. The required portion of the engineering and science field is smaller than that of a full engineering or science degree, which offers flexibility to use unrestricted electives for other areas. This creates a more flexible platform on which to build your course of study.

To declare a joint degree, contact the SHASS academic administrator. You’ll need to download and fill out the Course 21E / 21S Proposal Form (PDF)

Subject requirements

The requirements for a joint degree can be found in the degree charts for 21E -Humanities and Engineering and 21S – Humanities and Science. These charts include a list of humanities fields that can be incorporated into this joint SB degree.

Some popular combinations include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Comparative Media Studies and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science
  • Writing and Mechanical Engineering
  • Literature and Mathematics
