Elise Newman ’16 PhD ’21 is an assistant professor in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy. She has written on topics in syntax, semantics, and first language acquisition. Her current work studies the relationship between words and sentence structure: how the requirements of individual words get reflected in grammatical rules, and how principles of grammar likewise constrain the possible properties individual words can have. Prior to joining MIT’s faculty, she spent two years as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh.
Newman earned a PhD in Linguistics and SBs in Linguistics and Physics from MIT.
