What’ve you enjoyed most about your area of study? Was there a particular discovery, new skill or way of thinking, or insight that you found especially valuable? Please share an example from your favorite class or experience.
One aspect of studying economics that has been particularly enjoyable for me is its application in addressing real-world issues, such as environmental sustainability. A significant insight I gained during my Environmental Economics class was understanding how economic theory can inform environmental regulation policies. Through this course, I delved into energy and emissions markets and learned how regulatory frameworks can be designed to promote positive environmental impacts while also considering economic efficiency. This experience not only deepened my understanding of economics but also highlighted its potential to drive positive change in the world. It was fascinating to see how economic principles could be harnessed to tackle pressing environmental challenges, and it inspired me to explore further how economics can be utilized to promote sustainability and create a better future for generations to come.”
How does the knowledge from this field, or your interest in it, combine with your other major or minor studies at MIT?
My other studies in computer science and business analytics at MIT are a natural complement to my knowledge in economics. When I combine these fields, I can apply economic principles to analyze data and make informed decisions in business settings. For example, understanding supply and demand dynamics has enhanced my ability to develop pricing models for products in a tech company.
An MIT education includes study in the scientific, technical, social science, arts, and humanities fields. How do you think that wide range of knowledge and perspectives will be valuable to you – for your career success and for your enjoyment of life?
My interdisciplinary education at MIT has been instrumental for my education and personal growth. By studying both economics and computer science, I have a more well-rounded understanding of how technology can be used to address complex societal challenges. Moreover, it has allowed me to be able to connect with people from all sorts of different backgrounds and interests.
What are your plans for the future?
Next year, I will be pursuing a Master’s of Engineering degree at MIT, conducting research on machine learning models for health! In the long-term, It is a step to my overall goal of pursuing a career in the intersection of technology, economics, and business, where I can leverage my skills in computer science and economics to create a positive societal impact.
