Andy Wilds MIT Music and Theater Arts

Andy Wilds is the Program Manager for Music at MIT. He previously developed his arts administration skills through his work with nonprofits, performing arts organizations, and his own personal projects. Although he initially intended to pursue a teaching position in higher education, Andy discovered he enjoyed the administrative side of things while working in the Music History office as a student at the New England Conservatory.

Wilds holds a DMA in Music Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, an MM in Music Performance from the University of Texas Butler School of Music, and a BM in Music Performance, also from the University of Texas at Austin.

Describe your roles and responsibilities.

As Program Manager for Music within the Music & Theater Arts Section, I oversee day-to-day operations for the Music Program, including the Music Events Office, which produces around 150 events per academic year. I also maintain the Music events calendar and manage all Music spaces and inventories. With the opening of the Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building this academic year, our Music spaces now include an incredible concert hall, a new rehearsal space for our Balinese Gamelan and Senegalese drumming ensembles, dedicated facilities for our Music Technology Program, and a set of amazing music rehearsal rooms.

How long have you worked at MIT?

I worked in my previous role as Events Planning Assistant in Music & Theater Arts for about three and a half years, and I have been in my current role as Music Program Manager since October 2023.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I enjoy working with all my colleagues in Music & Theater Arts! We have a great, supportive culture in the Section that makes the work that much more rewarding. It also feels good to help provide a creative outlet for the many students who participate in MTA classes and performance ensembles.

What advice would you offer someone interested in what you do?

Arts administration can be a little chaotic sometimes, so be open to suggestions and feedback, especially from people who have been doing it longer than you and develop lots of processes to keep yourself organized.

What are your hobbies and interests outside work?

I’m a professional saxophonist, and I perform all around New England as a freelance musician. I also have the pleasure of being in a cover band with my wife, so we get to gig together on the weekend!
