Anne Marie Michel

Assistant Dean, Resource Development
School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences

Anne Marie Michel

Anne Marie Michel is Assistant Dean for Development in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS). Her role requires a combination of vision, short-term planning, and long-term commitment. “I work collaboratively with [MIT’s] Central Resource Development Office and the other School Development Officers to develop and execute a fundraising strategy that brings in philanthropic resources in support of SHASS’ priorities,” she says.

Describe your roles and responsibilities.

As the Assistant Dean, me and my team work with the Dean and Department Heads to define the School’s goals, determine how best to meet those goals, and find ways to secure funding for them. For SHASS, I travel widely in America and abroad. My areas of responsibility include Europe and Latin America. My team welcomes visitors from across the globe to MIT. We plan events at the Institute and in other cities, and we work on closing and properly stewarding gifts once they’re received.

How long have you worked at MIT?

Thirty-one years! I previously worked in Central Development for seven years in the Office of Foundation Relations. Following a three-year stint at a foundation, I returned to my current role in 2002.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best thing is being inspired every day by the talented, incredible faculty, students, and staff at MIT. I learn at least one new thing every day but, often as not, learn many new things. These are great gifts.

SHASS is an amazing place and I am proud to be developing resources for the work we do here.  I’m also lucky to work with the best development team anyone could ask for!

What advice would you offer someone interested in doing what you do?

Volunteer for non profits you care about and learn about different aspects of development to get some experience. Research entry-level fundraising positions, find, connect with, and learn from mentors, and get ready to work, learn and grow.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Every spring, with my neighbor (whose name is named Anne Marie!), I set up a small community garden on my street with a bench and plantings. Our neighbors use it, which is so gratifying. I am involved in the native plants for wildlife movement and animal welfare work.

I have lived in Cambridge since 1986, raising my daughter here. I live in an 1840s old house with my husband, terrier and fish.
