Assistant Director for Academic Programs Administration
Department of Economics
Julia Martyn-Shah’s work in the MIT Department of Economics requires regular contact with doctoral students, faculty, and other members of the staff. The Assistant Director for Academic Programs Administration helps guide a variety of folks along their journeys through the economics ecosystem.
“I spend a lot of time finding answers, resources, and solving small mysteries,” she says.
Describe your roles and responsibilities.
I provide day-to-day management and input into the strategic direction on the administration of academic-related activities for our PhD program. I oversee student funding and work closely with several faculty committees facilitating our admissions cycle, visit days, and faculty hiring efforts. I act as a general resource for both prospective and current PhD students along with our faculty and staff, helping to navigate issues at a local departmental level and also within the greater MIT community.
How long have you worked at MIT?
Six years this November.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I love that I wear many different hats in this role. One day I might be reviewing fellowships and processing graduate student appointments and the next I could be working with caterers on an event or working with a faculty committee to review candidate applications. I also really appreciate the staff, students and faculty that I work with daily.
What advice would you offer someone interested in doing what you do?
Hone in on your problem solving skills! It’s also important to be able to quickly adapt to changing situations as new challenges pop up regularly and priorities shift.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I love to bake and eat baked goods, take leisurely hikes, travel, and spend time with my husband, toddler, and dog.
