Maria DiMauro

Maria DiMauro is Director, Administration and Finance (DAF) in the Department of Political Science. A SHASS employee since 1996, she enjoys working closely with her colleagues to produce the best possible outcomes. “Develop strong leadership and communication skills to effectively manage teams and network with professionals,” she says.
Describe your roles and responsibilities.
In my role as DAF, I am responsible for the day-to-day personnel, financial, and general operational management in Political Science. I provide counsel and support to the department head, department faculty, students, and other staff members regarding finances, personnel, operations, and other policy matters. I oversee administrative elements including (but not limited to) human resources and space planning. I also work closely with staff to ensure smooth operations while supervising financial and administrative headquarters staff, including mentoring and career development planning.
How long have you worked at MIT?
I’ve been working at MIT for thirty-seven years, beginning with the Laboratory for Nuclear Science in 1988 as a Fiscal Officer. With SHASS, I was previously the Financial Officer position in the Dean’s Office for seven years, the DAF in the History Section for six years. I became DAF in the Department of Political Science In 2007.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is dealing with a wide variety of tasks which deal with staff, faculty, and students and being able to work in a team environment in which we partner to produce the best outcomes.
What advice would you offer someone interested in what you do?
Gain experience in financial management and administrative roles to build expertise. Learn from experts’ experiences and take advantage of their insights.
What are your hobbies and interests outside work?
I enjoy traveling, cooking, gardening, taking long walks, and spending time with family and friends.
