MF Gydus is the Director, Administration and Finance (DAF) for the Literature Section. She values networking and believes in the value of investigating opportunities. “Building strong relationships—with staff, faculty, and the Dean’s Office—is really at the heart of this role,” she says.

Gydus previously worked as the Director of Business Systems and Operations at MIT Press. She earned a bachelor of arts in English from Boston College.

Describe your roles and responsibilities.

As the DAF in Literature, I handle our finances, operations, and Human Resources. I work closely with our head Sandy Alexandre to support her vision and share data to help guide decisions.

How long have you worked at MIT?

I’ve been at MIT for over 21 years, spending my first two decades at the MIT Press, where I most recently served as Director of Operations and Systems. In 2023, I completed MIT’s Leader-to-Leader course, which inspired me to explore new opportunities on the academic side of the Institute.

What’s the best thing about your job?

No two days are ever the same! The unpredictability can be a little unnerving at times, but honestly, the alternative would be far too boring.

What advice would you offer someone interested in what you do?

My advice is pretty universal: Find ways to get involved. Most of my professional growth has come from saying ‘yes’ whenever a new challenge or opportunity came my way.

What are your hobbies and interests outside work?

Family is the most important part of my life. Whether it’s trail walks with my husband, cooking for my adult children, cheering on my nieces at their activities, or spending time with my mom and sisters, I feel recharged when I’m with them. I also love to read and recently taught myself how to knit.
