Nadie Brathwaite

Center for International Studies

Nadie Brathwaite is the Director, Administration and Finance (DAF) for the Center for International Studies (CIS), which aims to educate the next generation of global citizens and leaders while advancing the Institute’s international research and education efforts. Anchored in the social sciences, CIS also works closely with MIT’s premier science and engineering researchers. CIS empowers students, faculty, and scholars to bring MIT’s interdisciplinary style of research and scholarship to address complex global challenges.
“I enjoy continuously learning and deepening my understanding of how MIT operates,” says Brathwaite. She previously worked at Brandeis University and the Harvard School of Public Health. She holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Emmanuel College.
Describe your role and responsibilities.
As the Director of Administration and Finance (DAF) for the Center for International Studies, I oversee the daily operations and financial management of a very dynamic unit. My work includes financial management, administrative operations, budgeting, space planning, human resources, and strategic support for our programs and leadership team. I focus on ensuring that our operations run efficiently, resources are used wisely, and our team has what it needs to thrive.
How long have you worked at MIT?
I’ve been at MIT for 12 years. My journey began in the Office of the Vice President for Finance (VPF), where I built a strong foundation and from there I transitioned to the MIT Energy Initiative as a fiscal officer before joining the Center for International Studies.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Every day brings something new, there’s never a dull moment. The variety of my responsibilities keeps me engaged and inspired.
What advice would you offer someone interested in what you do?
Build your network and don’t hesitate to ask a lot of questions. MIT is full of knowledgeable and generous colleagues, so connecting with them is one of the best ways to learn and grow in this community.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family and staying connected to my culture by visiting my home country Trinidad and Tobago whenever possible. I also love gardening and crocheting, it allows me to be creative while unwinding.
