The new Fang Fund invites proposals to promote faculty research, curriculum development, and public engagement in the spirit of increasing collaboration and visibility in interdisciplinary computing research. The Fund is open to all full-time faculty, of any professorial rank, including senior and full-time lecturers.

Deadline: All 2022 Fang Fund applications are due on December 1, 2021.

Send your submission to your Administrative Officer.

The range for funding support is from $10,000 to $20,000.
 

Eligibility


Submission guidelines are listed below. In each of these categories, full-time faculty at all professorial ranks, senior lecturers, and full-time lecturers are eligible to apply for support.
 

Categories


Research Funds

This funding supports research assistants, travel, and supplies (e.g. books, documents, access to databases, equipment, etc.) related to new or ongoing research.

Proposal Content: Substantive proposals will be required and should generally be no more than 5 pages in length. The proposal should:

Discuss the ways the research or creative arts project relates to advancing understanding of computation/big data in the applicant’s field of study.

Discuss the intellectual and methodological approaches to the topic or project proposed.

Provide a detailed budget.

 

Curriculum Development

This funding supports research assistants and supplies (e.g. books, documents, and access to databases) related to the development of new classes.

Proposal Content:  Short descriptive proposals will be required and should be no more than 2 pages in length. The proposal should:

Describe how the proposed class will advance the teaching of issues related to computation in the unit’s discipline. Or

Explain how the proposed class curriculum will relate to classes currently offered in the Schwarzman College of Computing.

Provide a detailed budget.

 

Public Engagement

Engaging with the wider public through invited speakers, colloquia, and other events is an important component of MIT SHASS efforts to highlight the larger cultural and social implications of computation and big data.

Proposal Content: One-page description of the events, including invited guests, targeted audience, and a detailed budget (e.g. speaker honorarium, space rental, refreshments, video recording services, etc.)
