MIT School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences - Great Ideas Change the World

MIT-Balliol College Faculty Exchange

Dean Melissa Nobles
MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to send our annual solicitation for proposals from MIT faculty who wish to participate in the exchange program that MIT conducts with Balliol College at Oxford University. This program is administered in the Dean’s Office of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.  We ask your help in identifying faculty in your school who might be interested in visiting Balliol College during the academic year.

In the past, on average, two or three MIT faculty have gone to Balliol, and MIT has hosted one or two Balliol fellows each year. However, because of constrained funding, only one visitor in each direction will be possible in the forthcoming year. We are certain to receive more applications than the program can accommodate this coming year. The final selection of whom to invite will be made by a small committee at Balliol based on the strongest overlapping research interests with Balliol faculty. To aid in the overall selection process—should there be more than one proposal from your School, I ask that you rank order proposals as best you can.

Guidelines and Particulars
The program covers air travel, room, and board expenses for the faculty member (and spouse). No other stipends are provided. The length of a visit can range from one to four months, and can usually be tailored to individual needs, in order to coincide with a sabbatical or other leave. The Oxford academic year runs generally from October 1 to mid-June, but summer visits are also possible. I have attached a brief description of the Guidelines and Particulars for this program.

What to Include in a Proposal
A formal proposal requires a brief, one-page description of the applicant’s area of research, the proposed timing of the visit, and a current CV.  Strong preference is given to those applicants who have an identified “host” at Balliol.

Proposals should be sent (via email or hard copy) directly to Marc Jones, Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, at mbj@mit.edu or in 4-240.  In the meantime, any faculty member who has questions about the program should feel free to contact Marc. Balliol's final decision of the selected visitor is generally made in February.

Thank you for your assistance.
