On January 14 at 3 pm EST, experts from MIT and University of Edinburgh will gather digitally for the powerful conversation about the future of democratic partnerships amid today's global crises.
Speakers:
Daron Acemoglu is an Institute Professor in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His recent research focuses on the political, economic and social causes of differences in economic development across societies; the factors affecting the institutional and political evolution of nations; and how technology impacts growth and distribution of resources and is itself determined by economic and social incentives. He is co-author (with James A Robinson) of Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty and The Narrow Corridor: States, Societies, and the Fate of Liberty.
Devi Sridhar is a professor at the University of Edinburgh where she holds a Personal Chair in Global Public Health. She is founding director of the Global Health Governance Programme. Her research considers the effectiveness of public health interventions and how to improve developmental assistance for health. She is the author of two books—Governing Global Health: Who Runs the World and Why? and The Battle against Hunger: Choice, Circumstance and the World Bank. She is author of “Illuminating Global Health Governance” published in The Lancet (October, 2020).

John Tirman is the executive director and a principal research scientist at MIT's Center for International Studies. Tirman is author most recently, Dream Chasers: Immigration and the American Backlash (MIT Press, 2015) and The Deaths of Others: The Fate of Civilians in America’s Wars (Oxford University Press, 2011). His main research interests currently focus on human security.
